Cosy cottages near the canal

If you’re in search of a peaceful holiday cottage near Bath, but with all the feel of the countryside, Fig Cottage is tucked away in the pretty village of Holt, just a short distance from Bradford-on-Avon. Nestled in the grounds of a Grade II listed house which borders National Trust gardens and open meadows, this rural retreat offers the best of both worlds with vintage décor and modern appliances, with local amenities to cater to your every whim.

Bradford-on-Avon is known for its place on the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs through Bath, before winding out into the neighbouring valleys, such as the Bathampton meadows, bordered by the River Avon. In this leafy village you’ll find a range of self-catering cottages at New Leaf Farm, with frequent river access to the UNESCO World Heritage City nearby.

For a romantic foray by the canal, you may want to consider Withy Mills Farm, which has four beautiful barn conversions near the old Somerset canal basin. Neatly situated on a circular walk, the property offers beautiful views in any weather across the fields to the resident swans nesting amongst the reeds.

Between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon you’ll find a wealth of independent shops, beautiful architecture and miles of canal towpath to explore by bike, boat or foot. There are also a range of open parklands and gardens are all within easy reach from Great Chalfield Manor (where Poldark was filmed) to Lacock Abbey (where Harry Potter was filmed), Dyrham Park, Longleat and Stourhead, so you’re sure to find something that appeals to any age range.
