Celebrate all things Austen this autumn

If you are prone to pick up an Austen novel or favour the Regency era, then you won’t want to miss all things Austen being celebrated across the historic city of Bath this autumn. Your ideal escape is just one click away with Bath Self Catering and we’ve got a lot to share about the exciting calendar of events being rolled out across the city of Georgian splendour. The elegant but vibrant city may have evolved over the years, but remains remnant of the same spaces that inspired Austen’s Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Parade your best pageant frocks

Watch the striking centre of town come alive with a parade of period costume and immersive experiences for visitors to enjoy throughout the Jane Austen Festival. The renowned annual event is in its 20th year and will take place across the city from 10th to 19th September 2021.

Walk alongside fellow fans of Jane Austen in remarkable fashion at Grand Regency Costumed Promenade, considered the highlight of the festival for many, you’ll pass by many of Bath’s most prominent landmarks, providing a grand tour of the city centre whilst you celebrate with fellow fans.

Gain a flavour of the Georgian era

Did you know you can view the family home of Jane Austen’s time in Bath mere footsteps from the long-standing pleasure gardens she used to pleasantly frequent for a gentile walk? Find out all about Jane’s life at the Jane Austen Centre, or view the height of Regency fashion at the Fashion Museum.

There is plenty to see and discover about Jane’s life in Bath, with a wealth of iconic sites where you can retrace the steps of Georgian gentry in days gone by. Sample the thermal waters at the Roman Baths and Pump Room, gaze at the grandeur of the Holburne Museum, or explore life as it was in a lovingly-restored Georgian townhouse at No. 1 Royal Crescent.

Explore special Austen attractions

From 26th August to 27th September, visitors are offered a rare opportunity to view a renowned portrait of Jane by her sister Cassandra at the Holburne Museum, the only widely accepted depiction of the celebrated author. You can also find a new immersive ‘Jane Austen in Bath’ experience at No.1 Royal Crescent, or join the virtual ‘Big Read’ of Persuasion from the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution on 16th September, a tale of enduring love across the class divide.

Those passing by on the month long festival can also enjoy guided walks, day trips, literary talk, concerts, workshops, even dance classes. Be sure not to leave without sampling a traditional afternoon tea, but however you choose to experience the magnificent city, allow yourself to be transported back in time and view Bath through a different lens.
